One of the many foods brought to the Americas by the Africans is Okra. Not familiar to some, but certainly to my West-Indian brothers and sisters. Too many recipes to mention here, but this salad will remind us of these contributions to our table. Happy Juneteenth.

The Venda women of Southern Africa who are related to the culture that built the Great Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe are famous for their take on the hats and cloaks they wear and the ancient beads worn around their necks that represent their ancestors. We used this as inspiration to design a table setting that helped us visually tell this story.

As part of an exhibition on African-inspired design at the King Arts Complex in Columbus, Ohio, we crated a series of tabletop vignettes. The fusion of crystal, French amber, and silver settings gave us a chance to create a truly high-style African-inspired dining experience.
